A 5-year waiting period to finalize has been a strong deterrent for foreign residents wishing to adopt a Greek child. Children of other heritages are available for adoption. Greek children may be adopted only by Greek nationals or those of Greek origin and residents in Greece, unless special needs. Children available range from infant to older children. In 2008, U.S. citizens adopted no children from Greece.
